1. What information do we collect?

We do not collect any personal information through the ChessNotate app. Through the website, we collect only aggregate, non-identifying analytics.

Information within the app. ChessNotate has no account system and no sign-in of any kind. The app does not connect to any server or cloud service, and it has no analytics or crash-reporting software built in. Every game you enter, every move you correct, and every PGN you export is processed entirely on your device and is never transmitted to us or to any third party.

Information automatically collected on the website. When you visit our website, including the free web version of ChessNotate at , our analytics provider (Cloudflare) may process aggregate, non-identifying information such as page views, approximate country, referring site, and browser or device type. This information does not reveal your specific identity and is not tied to any persistent identifier. Entering or pasting a PGN into the web version is processed in your browser only, in the same way as the app, and is never sent to us.

Information you provide to us directly. If you contact us for support, we will receive whatever information you choose to include in that message, such as your email address, so that we can reply to you.

2. How do we process your information?

We process the limited information described above only to operate and understand use of the website, and to respond to you if you contact us.

We process the aggregate website analytics described in Section 1 to identify usage trends and understand how our website is used, so that we can maintain and improve it. Where you contact us directly, we process the information you provide solely to respond to your enquiry.

3. What legal bases do we rely on to process your personal information?

Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we rely on our legitimate interests in operating and improving our Services, and on your consent when you contact us directly.

If you are located in the EU, UK, or another jurisdiction with similar requirements, this section applies to you. We process aggregate website analytics on the basis of our legitimate interests in understanding and improving our Services, an interest which we believe does not override your rights, particularly as the analytics we use do not identify you. Where you contact us directly, we process the information you provide on the basis of your consent to that communication.

4. When and with whom do we share your personal information?

We do not sell, rent, or share personal information with anyone for advertising or marketing purposes. Limited technical data is processed by the service providers who host and serve our website.

Because we collect essentially no personal information, there is very little to share. The website is hosted on GitHub Pages and served through Cloudflare's content delivery network, and Cloudflare also provides our website analytics. As with any website, your device's IP address is briefly processed by these providers in order to deliver the page and for basic security and abuse protection. We have not sold or shared any personal information with third parties for a business or commercial purpose, and we do not intend to.

5. Do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?

No. Neither the app nor the website sets cookies, and our website analytics do not use any client-side identifier.

We do not use cookies, and we do not permit any third party to use cookies or similar tracking technologies (such as web beacons or pixels) on our Services. Our website analytics provider, Cloudflare Web Analytics, is built specifically to operate without cookies or persistent identifiers, so it cannot be used to recognise you individually or to track you across other websites.

6. Is your information transferred internationally?

Our website infrastructure operates internationally, but because we do not collect personal information from you, there is generally nothing of yours to transfer.

Our website is hosted and served through providers, GitHub Pages and Cloudflare, that operate infrastructure in multiple countries. Regardless of your location, the limited technical data described in Section 1 (such as your IP address, processed transiently to deliver the page) may be handled outside your own country. We do not otherwise transfer personal information internationally, because we do not collect it.

7. How long do we keep your information?

We do not retain personal information, because we do not collect it. Website analytics are kept in aggregate form by our analytics provider for a limited period.

The app does not retain any information about you, as none is ever collected. Aggregate website analytics are retained by Cloudflare in accordance with its own data retention practices, and we do not separately store or archive this data ourselves. If you contact us directly, we retain that correspondence only as long as necessary to resolve your enquiry.

8. How do we keep your information safe?

We aim to protect your information by not collecting it in the first place.

The most effective safeguard we can offer is architectural. The app performs all processing on your device and never transmits your data anywhere, so there is nothing for us to secure or for a third party to compromise. Where we do process limited technical data through our hosting and analytics providers, we rely on those providers' own security measures. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, so we cannot promise or guarantee absolute security.

9. Do we collect information from minors?

We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children.

ChessNotate is not directed at children, and because neither the app nor the website collects personal information from anyone, this applies equally regardless of a user's age. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under the age required by applicable law, please contact us at .

10. What are your privacy rights?

Depending on where you are located, applicable privacy law may give you rights regarding your personal information. Because we collect essentially no personal information, there is generally nothing to exercise these rights over.

In some regions, such as the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Canada, you have certain rights under applicable data protection laws, which may include the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, and the right to object to or restrict our processing of it. Because the app and website do not collect personal information from you in the ordinary course of use, there is typically nothing held about you to which these rights would apply. If you believe that is not the case, or have any question about your rights, you can contact us using the details in Section 14, and we will consider and act upon any request in accordance with applicable data protection laws.

11. Controls for Do-Not-Track features

Most web browsers and some mobile operating systems include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. As there is no uniform technology standard for recognising and implementing DNT signals, we do not currently respond to them. This is a straightforward statement of fact rather than a limitation on your privacy, since we do not track you in the first place regardless of any DNT signal.

12. Do United States residents have specific privacy rights?

Residents of certain US states have rights under state privacy laws, including the right to know, access, correct, and delete personal information, and the right to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not collect personal information in a way that these rights would meaningfully apply to.

We have not sold or shared any personal information with third parties for a business or commercial purpose in the preceding twelve months, and we do not intend to. If you are a resident of a US state with an applicable privacy law and have any question about the limited data described in this notice, you may contact us at , and we will respond in accordance with applicable law.

13. Do we make updates to this notice?

Yes, we will update this notice as necessary to stay compliant with relevant laws, and if the app or website ever begins collecting information it does not today.

We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this Privacy Notice. We encourage you to review this Privacy Notice periodically to be informed of how we are protecting your information.

15. How can you review, update, or delete the data we collect from you?

Based on the applicable laws of your country or state of residence, you may have the right to request access to any personal information we hold about you, details about how we have processed it, or its correction or deletion. Because the app and website do not collect personal information from you in the ordinary course of use, there is typically nothing to review, update, or delete. To make a request regardless, please contact us using the details in Section 14.
